What is a Penny Dreadful?

Penny Dreadful is an original new series created by John Logan and executive produce by Sam Mendes. John Logan was inspired to create Penny Dreadful as a way to telling new stories with some most famous, gothic characters as: Frankenstein, Dorian Grey and other worldly figures in 1890’s London.

Penny Dreadfuls were fiction publications in the 1900 century. Each week Londoners would rush out to the local news stands to get the latest story. Penny Dreadfuls were unique because they were stories of crime, cult and supernatural. Archetypes of the characters that we know today were inspired by Penny Dreadfuls. For example Bram Stoker was inspired to write Dracula based of one very famous Penny Dreadful “Varney, the Vampyre”.

It was the first time that the media was able to bring horror into people living rooms.
