DRAMA

The Flash Tuesdays at 8p The-Flash

The CW’s most-anticipated newcomer this year—filling the Tuesday 8p timeslot graciously vacated by ABC’s Agents of SHIELD next season (when that show moves back an hour)—is a spin-off from Arrow and will be one of three DC Comics-based shows on the network next season. (Maybe a name change to The DCW is in order?) After appearing on a few episodes of Arrow last season, Grant Gustin (Glee,90210) stars in The Flash as forensic scientist turned costumed crimefighter Barry Allen, who is the fastest man alive thanks to a freak accident. The cast also includes Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order), Tom Cavanagh (Ed), and John Wesley Shipp, who starred in the title role in CBS’sshort-lived 1990 version of The FlashArrow producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg (though not Marc Guggenheim) will produce this new show as well, along with Arrow writer Geoff Johns. Expect Arrow‘s Stephen Amell to appear in the first episode.

UPFRONT 2014/2015 – CBS

With the luxury of being able to renew the bulk of its primetime schedule, CBS is once again ordering the fewest new scripted series (8) of any major network, though CBS has made far more scheduling changes than it typically does.

The addition of 8 weeks of Thursday Night Football in the early fall has forced CBS to tinker with its scheduling on several nights. Mondays will now feature two (rather than four) comedies, though a four-comedy block will return to Thursdays on October 30th after the eight weeks of football. Rather than take hit The Big Bang Theory off the air for two months, the show will start the season on Mondays (temporarily displacing 2 Broke Girls) before moving back to Thursdays.

This series will be a prequel to Batman’s story, centering on the origin story of future Gotham City Commissioner James Gordon (Southland‘s Ben McKenzie) in his days as a rookie detective, before he meets the Caped Crusader. Fox will launch at least a dozen new titles in 2014-15, with 6 dramas (including Batman prequel Gotham), 4 comedies, a reality show, and a miniseries.

The rapidly fading American Idol will have a significantly decreased presence on the schedule next season, airing around 37 hours in total instead of 56-60. That will likely translate to a reduction to one night a week instead of two, at least after the audition rounds.

The final season of Glee will likely be shorter than the 24 episodes previously announced. The series will also be held back until midseason.

Animation Domination is over … partially. Live action will be heading to Sunday nights this fall, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine and newcomer Mulaney mixed in with Bob’s BurgersThe Simpsons, and Family Guy.

UPFRONT 2014/2015 – ABC

abc_PropertyLogoSet_ThickOL_060107

ABC officially announced 12 new shows for 2014-15, including five comedies, a musical, and six dramas—most notably, a second Marvel series, Agent Carter. Two additional shows (miniseries Astronaut Wives Club and similarly titled but unrelated drama The Club [now called Members Only]) were previously ordered by the network and are presumed to still be in ABC’s plans for next season, though they have so far been omitted from today’s announcements.

Thursdays will be Shonda Rhimes night, with all three hours given over to the producer’s shows. Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal will each shift an hour earlier to make way for her newest drama, How to Get Away With Murder.

The network president Paul Lee said that this new schedule reflects a good mix of stability and boldness, since every day of the week is held up by pillars that will help launch the best new series. In fact, ABC airs many as 7 series that fall within the top 20 of the band 18-49 (more than any other network).
