The latest tv & movie guide
The first episode of Extant(CBS, tonight 9th July) establishes with several quick cues that you are looking at the future. When astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) washes up in the bathroom, she pulls up a news feed on the mirror. The garbage can outside her house is a transparent prism that compacts trash elegantly. Also, the show seems to posit an alternative universe in which CBS airs high-profile new dramas and they’re not about cops or lawyers.
The four first-year series ordered for The CW’s 2014-15 season are detailed below.
The CW’s most-anticipated newcomer this year—filling the Tuesday 8p timeslot graciously vacated by ABC’s Agents of SHIELD next season (when that show moves back an hour)—is a spin-off from Arrow and will be one of three DC Comics-based shows on the network next season. (Maybe a name change to The DCW is in order?) After appearing on a few episodes of Arrow last season, Grant Gustin (Glee,90210) stars in The Flash as forensic scientist turned costumed crimefighter Barry Allen, who is the fastest man alive thanks to a freak accident. The cast also includes Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order), Tom Cavanagh (Ed), and John Wesley Shipp, who starred in the title role in CBS’sshort-lived 1990 version of The Flash. Arrow producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg (though not Marc Guggenheim) will produce this new show as well, along with Arrow writer Geoff Johns. Expect Arrow‘s Stephen Amell to appear in the first episode.
NBC has ordered 5 new dramas (including the DC Comics adaptation Constantine), 7 new comedies (including one from Tina Fey), and 4 “event” series (including a reboot ofHeroes). Only 6 of those newcomers will launch this fall, with the remaining 10 held until midseason. Descriptions for all new shows can be found below.
